Laurel Mercer, in all of her bad ass-ness We're bitches you don't want to mess with." This book is the result of original, scholarly research in medieval chronicles and manuscripts - some never before translated into English - yet its narrative is lively and interesting, exploring the essence of the queen's personality. The Basque princess who rose to confront unimagined adversity became the epitome of medieval womanhood in a world dominated by men, governing one of the wealthiest, most powerful - and most socially complex - states of Europe and the Mediterranean. In Margaret's story sisterhood is just the beginning. This landmark work is the first biography of the great-granddaughter of El Cid and friend of Thomas Becket who could govern a nation and inspire millions. Her life and times make for the compelling story of a wife, sister, mother and leader. For five years during the twelfth century, Margaret of Navarre, Queen of Sicily, was the most powerful woman in Europe and the Mediterranean. Sometimes it takes just one strong woman to tame a pack of zealous men. Through a medical test on him, doctors discovered a huge tumor in a section of the brain that deals with decision-making: the orbitofrontal cortex. Our vulnerableness may be considered in the fashion changes to the brain generated, for instance, by bad events and sickness, influence us.Ī very surprising instance of this was a man at his forties whose spouse of 20 years abruptly saw he had – apparently all of a sudden – started to get obsessed with child pornography. Astoundingly, neuroscience demonstrates their assumption is false.Īctually, much of your brain activity follows from completely physical and biological processes that are happening subconsciously, and you cannot affect them. Many people think they’re truly cognizant of and have the command over mostly every emotion, anything they do, and thoughts. Through this summary, you’ll learn the things the subconscious section of your brain is doing by means of neuroscientific research and examples.Ĭhapter 1 – Contrary to our assumption, none of us truly has the command over their thoughts, emotions, and what they do. The author’s snapshot of British society today is unbelievably accurate, even though one could feel that sometimes it is a bit too caricatural: Ellie’s mum wears Boden, Mikey’s mum wears tracksuits for example – it is not inaccurate, but might a slight generalisation. If you want some social realism, look no further. All the odds are against Mikey and Ellie – not only is the history between their siblings making it near impossible for them to be together but they come from such opposite worlds, you’d think they would not stand a chance. But You Against Me is first and foremost a story of contemporary star-crossed lovers. The author does not shy away from thorny subjects and here she broaches the subject of rape. This second novel by Jenny Downham is as uncompromising, as hard-hitting and as utterly compelling as Before I Die. But it is Ellie he meets and everything changes. When Mikey decides to take revenge, he decides to turn up at the Parkers’ house looking for Tom. Ellie’s brother is on bail, charged of her assault. Mikey’s sister is stuck indoors terrified to go outside after she was allegedly assaulted. Learn about the major environmental problems facing our planet and what can be done about them! This isn’t inherently a bad thing, but it does mean older kids and adults will have to sit through a couple of slower-paced scenes and moments of characters pointing out what should be obvious to anyone in their double digits.įrog And Toad follows two best friends, Frog and Toad, as they spend their days hanging out together and, in the process, learning what it means to be a good friend. However, the same can’t be said for Apple TV’s adaptation of the books, as the show was clearly made with little kids in mind, first and foremost. The Frog And Toad books remind me in my adult years of what a healthy friendship looks like - and the books are funny and well-written enough that they’re entertaining for everyone, regardless of age. I believe a huge reason why is that society teaches us from a young age that romance is inherently more important than friendship, rather than the two both being valid forms of true love. Yes, they’re short and written simply, but their lessons on friendship are lessons adults greatly need reminding of, since research has shown that people are reporting fewer close friends than ever. Yes, they’re great books for kids, but for adults, I’d argue they’re even better. The Frog And Toad books by Arnold Lobel are some of my favorite things on the planet.
